Day 3 – God’s love

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” 1 John 4:7-8 (KJV)
Do we struggle to love others because we struggle to accept God’s love for us?
How can we give something that we’ve not accepted and allowed ourselves?
The King James Study Bible Notes gives a powerful explanation regarding the mutual love God expects:
‘John returns to the theme of mutual love. Perhaps the false teaching he felt compelled to combat had contributed to suspicion and contention in the fellowship. In context, John is not saying that everyone who loves is somehow a Christian, whether they trust in Christ or not. He makes it clear elsewhere that true knowledge of God entails the right belief about Christ, as well as the right response to God, including love of others. Mere human love apart from Christ’s redeeming presence and motivation falls short of love in its fullest dimension as a human response to God’s perfect and infinite compassion (cf. 1 Corinthians 13)’
It all starts with the love of God, the redeeming love that saved us from eternal death.
If we are unable to accept this love, we are unable to love and don’t know God.
Think about the love of God today. Have you truly accepted His love for you?
Prayer: Father God, we need Your presence in order to love the Godly way. Help us to die in our own views and feelings about love and guide us to accept Your unconditional love. Amen.
