DAY 3 – SPIRITUAL HUMILITY

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
The passion translation reads: “What happiness comes to you when you feel your spiritual poverty! For yours is the realm of heaven’s kingdom.”
It also means “humble in spirit” or total dependence upon God for everything. The implication of this verse is that the poor in spirit have one remedy, and that is trusting God. This total reliance upon God is the doorway into the kingdom realm.
Beyond trusting Him for our daily needs – “humility in spirit” goes way deeper and is the recognition of our emptiness and inadequacy – our absolute need for His grace, mercy, and infilling of the Holy Spirit. It is the recognition of the fact that our spiritual condition is bankrupt, weak, broken, messy, and absolutely dependent on His grace.
It does not refer to those who possess nothing as much as it refers to “pious” or “saintly” and can be translated as “Delighted are those who have surrendered completely to God and trust only in Him.”
Spiritual poverty is the realization of our lack of God and our desperate need for Him. It allows abandonment to Divine Providence and frees us from anxiety about the future. Our true riches lie in our Savior and being called sons and daughters of God.
Prayer: Dear Abba, we need You above all else. You are our everything Jesus and we recognize our absolute spiritual need and poverty without You. We trust You completely for everything we need in this world because You are more than able and absolutely willing to take care of all our needs. We ask that You fill our spiritual emptiness and pour us full of the oil of Your Holy Spirit. Allow us to experience more and more of Your glorious Kingdom alive in us daily. We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
