DAY 4 – A Redemptive Story
2 Samuel 12:13 “Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord .“ Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin, you are not going to die..”
Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam, was a wife to Uriah and King David took her for himself and attempted to get Uriah killed on the frontlines of a war. A godly man can be drawn away and enticed by his evil desire. (James 1:14) That happened to King David in committing adultery with Bathsheba.
David’s sin resulted in the two deaths, that of Uriah and Bathsheba’s baby. The deaths remind us of sin’s temporal judgment affecting self and other people. In contrast, the death of the Son of God reminds us of the eternal consequences of sin. May his resurrection empower us to walk out of death – darkness into His light (1 Peter 2:9).
Bathsheba’s story had a redemptive ending, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, would be born into the world as a direct descendant of King David and Bathsheba (Matthew 1:7). Solomon’s mother Bathsheba is recorded in the holy Scriptures as an ancestor of Christ the same as Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth. These women had a sinful past, but God used them in Christ’s lineage. Christ willingly left His heavenly home to fight the battle against sin and to win for us at the cross and rose again and left an empty tomb. For the grace of God has appeared that offers a propitiation to all who repent and teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions to live a holy and blameless. (2 Timothy 2:14). David was a sinner saved by grace, as we are by the blood of Jesus.
Prayer: Help us Lord Jesus not to seek to cover up our sinfulness from the gaze of other people. Let the blood which King David shed remind us that our attempts at cover-up are futile. But the blood that Jesus shed reminds us that our attempts at cover-up are unnecessary for we are covered already in his perfect righteousness. Help us to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another so that we may be healed (James 5:16). Amen.
