Day 5 – RESTORATION AND COMFORT

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

We will linger here today. We have spoken about mourning as waiting and mourning over sin; but what about the grief and mourning that comes from this life?

Each beatitude begins with a blessing (another word for blessing is happy) – Jesus is giving us ways to live so that we may have a happy and blessed life. The world does not reward this type of life, but God does! The world may say a blessing is when all your dreams come true and when everything goes your way, but Jesus said happy (blessed) are those sad and broken-hearted.

Every one of us has a story. Divorce, abuse, job loss, broken relationship… cancer, terminal diagnosis… Everyone experiences natural sorrow. God made us with the capacity to cry.

“There is a time to weep and a time to laugh” Ecclesiastes 3:4

Well-meaning people may say “don’t cry” but God uses tears to heal a broken heart.

There is a purpose in our pain and God never wastes it! In fact, there is a blessing in our pain.

When Jesus was broken by a crown of thorns, nails, and a spear, His blood was poured out that cleanses us from all sin. God blesses the broken. We are sure to know trials and sorrows in this life, but God gives us the blessed consolation that our trials come to only make us strong. Through it, we learn to trust our Father, depend upon His Word and without fail we always see His faithfulness.

“Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort that we receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Prayer: Abba Father, thank You that I can run to You to bind up my broken heart and comfort me through all my troubles. I know they make me strong, and I trust You to allow my suffering to be a blessing to another. Thank You that my pain is never wasted and that You draw close to me when I am brokenhearted. You, my precious Jesus, have known great sorrow and understand better than anyone. Amen.
