Day 6 – Loving the Godly way: Active

“constantly rejoicing in hope [because of our confidence in Christ], steadfast and patient in distress, devoted to prayer [continually seeking wisdom, guidance, and strength], contributing to the needs of God’s people, pursuing [the practice of] hospitality. Bless those who persecute you [who cause you harm or hardship]; bless and do not curse [them]. Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief]. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty [conceited, self-important, exclusive], but associate with humble people [those with a realistic self-view]. Do not overestimate yourself.”  Romans 12:12-16 (AMP)

God expects active love, but what is active love?

Active love is a devoted love for God and his people. A love denying yourself and acknowledging the needs of others.

ἀγαπάω agapaō, v. [143] to love; in the New Testament, usually the active love of God for his Son and his people, and the active love his people are to have for God, each other, and even (NIV Exhaustive Concordance Dictionary)

Romans 12:12-16 teaches the following truths about active Godly love:

  • Contributing to the needs of others
  • Hospitality
  • Blessing those who persecute us
  • Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who grieve
  • Live in harmony
  • Don’t be haughty
  • Associate with the humble
  • Don’t overestimate yourself

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may we constantly rejoice in our confidence in Christ and be steadfast and devoted in prayer as we seek to love others as You expect us to. Forgive us for selfish ways of loving others and help us to keep to Your commandment to love others as You love us. Amen.
