Holy Spirit – Day 9 – The Gentle Whisper

The Gentle Whisper
1 Kings 19:11,12 “…and a great, strong wind rent the mountains…and after the wind, an earthquake…and after the earthquake, a fire; and after the fire [a sound of gentle stillness and] a still small voice.”
It is almost impossible to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit whilst being distracted by the noise of life. The Lord often urges us in the Word to become quiet before Him. “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10); and “In quietness and confidence shall be your strength…” (Isaiah 30:15). This stillness is not merely a physical condition; it also signifies a heart that refuses to be distracted by problems, concerns and cares, but is rather focussed on listening intently to the Holy Spirit’s gentle whisper, as one version puts it. Another version speaks of “a sound of a gentle blowing”, and the older Afrikaans translation calls this voice of the Holy Spirit: “die, van ‘n sagte koelte”.
When Elijah realised that God wasn’t in the mighty wind, the noise of the earthquake or the fire, he was able to recognise the voice of the Holy Spirit in the still, gentle whisper that followed. Are we prepared to take time today from our busy lives to give the Holy Spirit an opportunity to speak into our hearts? He loves to share the Father’s heart with us; let’s not miss out!
Prayer: Holy Spirit, today I want to hear what You want to say to me. Please help me to become quiet before You so that my ears will hear. I lay down every care that is distracting me and I surrender to You. Amen
