Day 270 – 2 Corinthians: Difference between the Corinthian letters

“Dear brothers and sisters, I close my letter with these last words: Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:11 NLT

One would think that there is not much difference between the first and second letters to the Corinthians. Where the first is more practical in advice, the second is more personal, where Paul shares his testimonies with them as encouragement that even this apostle of God can struggle.

In his second letter, Paul addresses the problem of false teachers by defending his authority and the truth of his message. In the first letter, he covers practical issues and questions about marriage, freedom, spiritual gifts, and church order. He provides guidance on the church’s well-being, and in the second, he leads by serving with humble authority, which is vital to the overall health of the church. The first letter offers advice to help the church fight pagan influences in the wicked city of Corinth, while the second uses Paul’s testimony to support his authority in helping the church combat the confusion caused by false teachers.

From the differences between the letters, we learn that there is more than one way to approach problems in the church and in our personal relationships. Ultimately, the key is the love of Jesus. Truth should always be delivered with love.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the truths and advice shared in these letters to Corinth. Thank You, for once again showing us the authority and power our testimonies in Jesus Christ have and how we can use them to bring the truth to others. Help us to always humbly act in love. Amen.
