Day 115 – Esther: Character sketch of Esther

“Go and gather together all the Jews of Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will do the same. And then, though it is against the law, I will go in to see the king. If I must die, I must die.” Esther 4:16 NLT
We treasure security, even though we know that security in this life carries no guarantee – possessions can be destroyed, beauty fades, relationships can be broken, and death is inevitable. True security, then, must be found beyond this life. When our security rests on God and His unchanging nature can face the challenge of life with courage. Though she had a favoured position, there was no guarantee the king would listen to her, and the chances of her being executed for acting outside his will were great. Esther’s risk confirmed that God was the source of her security.
How much of your security lies in your possessions, position, or reputation? God has not placed you in your present position simply for your own benefit. He put you there to serve Him. Like Esther, this may involve risk. Are you willing to let God be your ultimate security?
Strengths and accomplishments
Esther had beauty and character that won the heart of Persia’s king. She combined courage with careful planning. Even as queen, she was open to advice and willing to act because she was more concerned for her people than her own security.
Life lessons from Esther’s life
Serving God often demands that we risk our own security. God always has a plan and purpose for the situations in which He places us. Courage, while often vital, does not replace careful planning.
Prayer: Father, thank You for being our unwavering security, and when we take risks for You, we act with divine courage. Help us understand that, like Esther, we were made for such a time as this. Amen.
