Day 117 – Job: Theme

“There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless—a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil. He had seven sons and three daughters. He owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams of oxen, and 500 female donkeys. He also had many servants. He was, in fact, the richest person in that entire area.” Job 1:1-3 NLT

Job was a prosperous farmer living in the land of Uz. Besides all his wealth and family, He was God-fearing. But satan came before God, claiming Job was only trusting the Lord because of his wealth and blessed life. God allowed him to destroy everything Job had in his life: his children, servants, herders, and livestock. He was covered with painful sores, and even after his wife told him to curse God, he didn’t.

Job’s friends came to grieve with him in silence, but soon enough they started to speculate why this was happening to Job. Their reasoning was that Job must have sinned, and repentance will stop the tragedies. Job maintained his innocence. Finally, God spoke out of a mighty storm and declared His creative and majestic power to Job, who humbled himself before the Lord, and our Almighty Father restored Job’s happiness, health and wealth.

It is easy to think we have all the answers or the best advice, but in the end, it’s only God who knows exactly why events unfold as they do, and we submit to Him as our Sovereign God.

Prayer: Father, thank You for teaching us from the story of Job’s life that You are the only One with all the answers. Even when we do not understand what or why things are happening, You do, and our trust should be secure in You. Amen.
