Day 70 – Hearts set to reject
“But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.” Luke 7:30
Jesus turned His gaze toward the crowds and reflected on the fickle, impossible-to-please spirit of His generation. He offered a vivid illustration, likening the critics of His day to petulant children sitting in the marketplace, playing games and complaining when their playmates refuse to join in, demanding a joyful song one moment, and a mournful funeral dirge the next.
The point was painfully clear: 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘎𝘰𝘥’𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.
John the Baptist came leading an austere, ascetic life, abstaining from bread and wine, and the religious elite dismissed him as a madman, claiming he had a demon. Then the Son of Man arrived, participating in the everyday life of the people, sharing meals and fellowship, and those same critics sneered, calling Him a glutton, a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and sinners.
What began as a malicious nickname thrown by bitter hearts has become one of the most glorious titles in all of Scripture: the friend of sinners. Of course, the religious leaders meant it as a slanderous lie. Jesus was never a friend to sinners in the sense that He partook in their wrongdoing or condoned their compromise. Rather, He was their friend in a divine, redeeming sense; He loved them too much to leave them as they were. He did not push the broken away; He drew near to deliver them from the guilt, shame, and power of their sin.
Jesus closed His observation with a timeless truth: “But wisdom is justified by all her children.” True wisdom is proven by its fruit. The religious establishment could hurl insults at John, yet his ministry brought thousands to deep repentance, preparing hearts for the Lord. They could slander Jesus, yet His life, teachings, and sacrificial love bore the undeniable, glorious fruit of eternal redemption. Wise are those who stop demanding that God conform to their preferences and instead recognize His divine hand at work in every season.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I allow a critical spirit or personal expectations to blind me to Your work. Thank You for being the compassionate Friend who drew near to save me. Give me the wisdom to discern Your truth, to rejoice in Your messengers, and to bear fruit that honours Your kingdom. Amen. ©
