Day 6 –Ready to be poured out

“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand” 2 Timothy 4:6 KJV

Other commentaries refer to the offer as a drink offering: “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.”(ESV).

The idea of a drink offering is first presented in Genesis 35:14, where Jacob poured out a drink offering before the Lord as a sacrifice. Included in the Mosaic Law, drink offerings could also be part of the sacrifice brought to the tabernacle. (Exodus 29:40-41 and Leviticus 23:13) Essentially, a drink offering is wine brought before the Lord and poured out at His altar as a representation of blood.

There was also a Roman connection to the pouring of a drink offering: every meal ended with a small sacrificial ritual to their deities where a cup of wine was poured out before them. Keeping in mind the time era Paul lived in, he managed to relate to both Jews and gentiles through this analogy.

Being “poured out” gives us the idea of COMPLETE giving, with no reservation. The liquid contents are completely emptied from the vessel and given to God. Paul was ever ready to be poured out for the Lord and in his mature age, he knew that he was waiting for his boarding call to Heaven. He was ready to give his all, the last drop, as a final, complete sacrifice of his earthly life.

We might not be ready for departure as he describes, but we should be ready to be poured out for the Lord. Giving all of ourselves to Him with no reservation. The emptier you become, the more space for God to fill you.

Prayer: Father, as I read through the life of Paul, I learned that through every action and every word written for You, he poured all of himself out for Your Glory. Lord, I am ready to pour myself out and let my life be a drink offering for You. Amen.
