Day 80 – Jesus Demonstrates Authority
Study Luke 8:30-33
“And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss.” Luke 8:31
When Jesus asked the unclean spirit for its name, the reply came back: 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯, for many demons had entered him. Rather than a personal name, it was an attempt to intimidate, evoking a Roman military force of thousands to claim strength and unity. Jesus was utterly unmoved by their numbers.
Terrified of being cast into the abyss, the demons begged Jesus to let them enter a nearby herd of swine instead. This reveals a striking truth: demonic spirits possess so little power that they cannot afflict even a herd of pigs without God’s permission. Jesus granted their request, and instantly, the herd ran violently down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
The sudden destruction of the swine exposed the true, malicious intent of the darkness. Satan’s desire is always to steal, kill, and destroy. They sought to ruin the man just as they destroyed the herd, but because he was made in the divine image, God’s restraining hand kept them from completing his destruction.
Jesus allowed this visible demonstration so everyone could see the depth of the enemy’s malice and the absolute reach of His authority. At the cross, Christ disarmed every spiritual power, making a public spectacle of their defeat. Whatever darkness you face, know that its power is strictly limited, and Christ reigns supreme overall.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your absolute authority over every force of darkness. Guard my heart and mind in Your peace and remind me daily that my soul is safe in Your victorious hands. Amen. ©
