Day 19 – Simeon
Study Luke 2:25-35
“And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.” Luke 2:26
This devout man, Simeon, whose name simply means “he who hears,” heard the Holy Spirit clearly and clung to the promise of seeing the Messiah before his death. I wonder, as he cradled Jesus in his arms, if he understood the majority of the moment. Yes, he was seeing the Messiah with his own eyes, but he was holding the promise God gave him – and the world. God is a promise keeper.
Simeon’s prophesy over Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies like:
Isaiah 9:2 “For people who walk in darkness will see a great Light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a Light will shine.”
Isaiah 40:5 “The glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all the people will see together. The Lord has spoken.”
Isaiah 42:6 “I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them.”
Isaiah 49:6 “He says, ‘You will do no more than restore the people of Israel to me. I will make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.”
Study Isiah 51:4 and 60:1-3 in light of Simeon’s prophecy.
Pray with me: Thank You, Father, for showing me that Your Word will fulfil its intended purpose since You spoke creation into existence. That from those very Words, You already had a redemption plan for us to be with You. Through Simeon’s prophecy, we also see the importance of listening to Your Word, holding on with all hope and perseverance to the fulfilment of it, and that You always keep Your promises. Amen. ©
