Day 23 – In His Father’s house
“And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Luke 2:49
Attendance at the major festivals was commanded in Exodus 23 and Deuteronomy 16, and it was customary for the faithful of Galilee to make these pilgrimages in large caravanning groups. Within such a vast company of travellers, it would not have been difficult to lose track of a young boy. Furthermore, children were a deeply integrated part of the community, and it was entirely normal for them to move freely among relatives and neighbours during the journey—reflecting the true essence of “it takes a village to raise a child.” However, after a day’s travel, the frantic couple, Joseph and Mary, realized Jesus was nowhere to be found among their companions.
When they finally discovered Him in the Temple, He was neither lost nor confused. Instead, He was deep in theological discussion with the priests and rabbis. In that era, nothing was more natural than a son taking up his father’s trade. While Jesus did follow in Joseph’s footsteps as a carpenter, His words in the Temple reveal that He was fully awakening to His unique, divine relationship with His heavenly Father.
Luke’s Gospel is the only one that provides a window into Jesus’ childhood. Reflecting on this narrative, one can only wonder what Joseph experienced as Jesus’ earthly father figure. Did he ever carry the weight of feeling as if he had failed as a dad – not just to any son, but to the Son of God? I believe God granted Joseph divine wisdom, special grace, and unique insight to raise, understand, and support the young Messiah. Though Scripture falls silent regarding Joseph after this Temple event, there is no doubt that Jesus loved him fiercely for his faithful stewardship as His earthly father.
Pray with me: Father, it is deeply reassuring to look at Joseph and Mary and realize that even this chosen couple faced the frailties of parenthood. We are often so hard on ourselves as parents, forgetting that You have given us these human examples to show that Your grace covers us. Thank You, Father, that when we fall short, You meet us with compassion, guidance, and endless grace. Amen. ©
