Day 18 – Unsolicited Blessings
“The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household.” 2 Samuel 6:11 NKJV
When following the journey of the ark of the Lord and the return to the nation of Israel, we learn that David built a house for the ark and could not wait to place the ark of the Lord in its final resting place – amongst His chosen and beloved people. It was a joyous occasion with celebration, dancing, and music. Everyone in Israel was giddy with anticipation and gratitude for the return of the ark of the Lord.
But then…
The oxen stumbled and it looked like the ark was going to fall over and Uzzah – walking next to the ark – reached out to keep it from falling. But the Lord’s anger rose against Uzzah because the clear instruction everybody knew was not to touch the sacred ark. He died on the spot. Celebration turned to mourning. And King David feared the Lord and rerouted the journey to the house of Obed-Edom. The King was too afraid to have the ark of the Lord in his city, but Obed-Edom was not. I can only describe this as an act of obedience and fear of the Lord when he welcomed the ark of the Lord into his home. And God blessed him and his entire household.
Sometimes God blesses us out of the blue. We don’t see it coming, but we are overwhelmed with gratitude when we encounter His goodness. God’s unsolicited blessings manifest from His mercy towards Obed-Edom. He did not ask for the ark of the Lord thinking he might be blessed; he just obeyed and welcomed the Lord into his house.
Prayer: Father, thank You for blessing us out of the blue for just being obedient to You and welcoming You into our homes. Thank You for the rich, unsolicited blessings You bestow upon us and I ask that each and every person invite You into their homes. Amen.
