Day 64 – On the Rock
Study Luke 6:46-49
“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.” Luke 6:48a
Jesus draws a sharp distinction between those who merely make a verbal profession of faith and those who 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 His words and live them out.
He asks a piercing question that cuts straight to the heart: “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” While we must confess Him as Lord, saying the words alone is never enough. Jesus warns against offering pious lip service while our hearts remain far away or letting our Sunday declarations fail to reach our Monday lives.
True discipleship requires three things: surrender (coming to Him), learning (hearing His words), and obedience (doing them).
Jesus compares this to building a house. From the outside, the wise and foolish builders look identical; both put in the work and complete their homes. The difference lies entirely in the hidden foundation, which is only proven when the trial comes. The storms of life and the ultimate judgment of God will inevitably test what we are anchored upon, exposing whether we built on shifting sand or solid rock.
Hearing God’s Word without practicing it leads to great ruin. Yet as we confront this high calling, we realize we cannot achieve it in our own strength. The Sermon on the Plain is meant to drive us back, again and again, as needy sinners into the grace of our Savior.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times my actions have not matched my words. Help me dig deep and build my life entirely upon the solid Rock of Your Word. Strengthen me by Your Spirit to be not just a hearer of Your truth, but a faithful doer. Amen. ©
