Day 79 – Deliverance of the Gadarene

Study Luke 8:26-29

“When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, ‘What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!’” Luke 8:28

Stepping ashore in the country of the Gadarenes, Jesus was met by a man completely bound by torment. His profile was tragic: possessed for a long time, wearing no clothes, living like an outcast among dead tombs, and driven by supernatural, destructive strength into the wilderness.

The villagers had tried to bind him with chains, but he repeatedly broke them. Driven out, he was left isolated, hurting the only person he could: himself. But when this man encountered Jesus, the unclean spirits were 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘥 to bow. Through the man’s voice, the demons cried out, calling Jesus the “Son of the Most High God” and begging not to be tormented.

In ancient times, naming someone was thought to give spiritual power over them, but the demons’ confession was a futile attempt to resist Christ. They possessed correct theological facts about His identity, yet lacked a heart of surrender.

Though this man was completely helpless to deliver himself, he was drawn to the Savior. Our souls, regardless of what we face or what we believe, will automatically be drawn to the creator of our souls. The demons feared Christ would torment them, yet it was they who had spent years destroying the image of God in this man. Where human chains failed, Jesus spoke with supreme authority, commanding the unclean spirit to release its hold. No life is ever too far gone, too broken, or too bound for the redeeming touch of Christ.

Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You that Your power breaks every chain of darkness and fear. Look upon those who feel bound by torment or brokenness today and let Your voice bring complete freedom and restoration. Amen. ©
