Day 1 – The I AM
“God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.” Exodus 3:14-15 NLT
When God gives Moses His eternal name – I AM – in Exodus 3, it is a pivotal moment in the redemptive history of Israel. God is revealed to His chosen nation and came to redeem them out of exile and lead them into a new life. Yahweh discloses who He is and what He is like: the I AM, the eternal, unchanging, living, self-existent One, infinite and glorious in every way –He is God!
In the gospel of John, Jesus applies the name “I AM” to himself to affirm that He is indeed God. Not a helper or great teacher, but the divine, eternal, pre-existent, infinite, perfect Being. Greater than Moses because He is the God of Moses. Life Himself who chose to give it up for us. All the Old Testament and God’s redemptive acts were pointing to the coming of Jesus as the God-in-flesh to redeem all.
God’s eternal name, Yahweh, needs no further explanation, but with every use of “I AM” Jesus pulls the curtain away for us to understand more about Yahweh. Seven beautiful reasons to fall deeper in love with Him.
Prayer: Father, I praise You Yahweh for who You are: I AM. You are such an amazing God who revealed Himself through Your eternal name so that I can today, thousands of years later, know and remember this. Thank You that we can learn who You are through the I AM statements of Jesus. Amen.
