Day 2 – I Am the Bread of Life
“Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 NLT
Preceding this statement, Jesus fed the 5,000 with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread, but the beauty of the miracle was lost on the Jews following Him. When Israel wandered the wilderness, they grumbled and complained to Moses they are going to perish from hunger. God provided Manna – Bread from Heaven – for the whole period of 40 years.
“Yes, He humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Deuteronomy 8:3
As the crowd around Jesus was growing yet again and demanded He gives them a miraculous sign like the manna, Jesus made this statement: I Am the bread of life. More important solving physical hunger through bread, Jesus offers Himself as the Bread of Life to fulfill the deeper hunger of our souls and our eternal need.
There is more to bread from God than bread itself. It’s not an earthly bread, but a heavenly bread from God, given to us only by His grace and goodness. God provides what we need most and should raise our eyes in faith.
Prayer: Our Father in Heaven, give us today our daily bread. The eternal bread who is Jesus so that we may be filled with Your eternal Word so that we will never hunger. Thank You that from this beautiful miracle in the wilderness, Jesus used to counter the temptation of hunger in the desert. Your Bread is more than enough to feed my hungry soul. Amen.
