Day 3 – I Am the Light of the World

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I Am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life” John 8:12 NLT

One of the most prominent themes in the Gospel of John is light for a world lost in hopeless darkness. Darkness itself cannot change its condition and Light has to enter and invade to make the change.

“The Lord went ahead of them, He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and He provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night. And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.” Exodus 13:21-22

This rich Old Testament account of God providing a cloud pillar and a fire pillar for His nation to follow, allowed them to be in the constant Light of God. (To think of it, they had their own, personal nightlight!) Jesus made this statement tying the idea of being the Light for those who follow him with the fire pillar that saved Israel from Pharaoh during the exodus. They crossed the Red Sea – following the light – to life on the other side.

A secondary Old Testament scripture shows the promise of the Light who will guide the nations. “I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations.” Isaiah 42:6 NLT. This light points to the salvation of the nations through the One who God gives to His people: Jesus Christ!

Prayer: Father, our eternal Light giver, please shine Your light in our lives so we can follow behind it like the pillars in Exodus knowing that we are following Jesus who is the Light of the nations. May we constantly seek Light in every aspect of our lives and situations so that Jesus our Light will forever change the condition of the darkness we face. Jesus, thank You for being light and that we have the assurance that we will never wander in darkness with You to follow. Amen.
