Day 61 – 1 Samuel: Introduction

“I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request. Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong to the Lord his whole life.” And they worshipped the Lord there” 1 Samuel 1:27-28 NLT
The book of First Samuel presents themes of great beginnings and tragic endings – like an athlete who starts a race strong but ultimately loses stamina and quits due to exhaustion, burnout, or injury. We are introduced to Eli, the high priest during the period of the judges. As a religious leader of the nation, Eli likely began his life with a deep relationship with God and a strong commitment to Israel. He showed a clear understanding of God’s purposes and calling when he interacted with Hannah and in the guidance of her son Samuel. Unfortunately, Eli’s life ended in disgrace as he faced judgment from God for the actions of his corrupt sons, and the sacred Ark of the Covenant fell into the hands of their enemies.
Another role player also got out of the starting point fast, Saul. A striking figure, this handsome and humble man was Israel’s choice to be their first official king. His early leadership was marked by leadership and bravery but because of his disobedience, he became jealous and paranoid and finally his kingship was taken away by God. Obsessed with killing David, he consulted a medium and finally committed suicide.
Among the events of Saul’s life stands another great beginner – David. A man who followed God ministered to Saul, killed Goliath and became a great warrior. We have to wait and see the conclusion of David’s story in 2 Samuel.
Prayer: Thank You, Father, that we can read about the royal events unfolding in Israel shaping the nation’s future. I ask that as we study this book, You will share Your wisdom with us and give us deeper insight into these characters and the history of Israel. Amen.
