Preparing the soil – Day 1
Excavation
“And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.” Luke 8:15 NLT
I don’t have green fingers. You’ll notice it immediately if you take a look at the few succulents I just pushed into decorative pots. During the festive season (a time I was planning some R&R time), I got an urge to plant. Sceptically I eyed our tiny patch of earth we called a garden and envisioned beautiful green foliage and plump vegetables.
How hard can it be, right? Determined and with spade in hand I started cleaning an area for beds. With a raised eyebrow hubby just took the spade. What I thought would be a quick and simple one day task ended in a intense three day excavation. I never realised how much hard labour goes into preparing the soil for the teeny tiny seeds I held in the palm of my hand. My Adam did such a good job cleaning and weeding the patches of earth I wanted dug up that I felt a slight tinge of guilt to sow. Persistently we watered and with an eagle eye I kept watch over the barren soil for any glimpse of new life. It was only after the heads of the first sprouts burst through the crust of earth that I realised God’s lesson for me. It was never about the seed. I had to learn about preparing the soil – correctly. Because without well prepared soil, you are just wasting good seed.
Prayer: Father, thank You for using simple daily tasks to teach us valuable lessons about Your Word. Thank You for allowing me to dig in the dirt and teaching me about soil before I understand seed. Amen.
