Day 60 – Ruth: Character sketch of Boaz

“And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, to be my wife. This way she can have a son to carry on the family name of her dead husband and to inherit the family property here in his hometown. You are all witnesses today.” Ruth 4:10 NLT

Heroes simply do the right thing at the right time, whether or not they realise the impact their actions have. They are seldom conscious of their moments of heroism, and others may not recognise their act as heroic. The one quality shared among heroes (historical and today) is the tendency to think of others before they think of themselves.

Boaz was a hero.

His words to his employees, relatives, elders, and others were coloured with kindness and he was sensitive to their needs. He offered help openly, not grudgingly as we see when he discovered who Ruth was. Not only did he do what was right – he did it right away. We are faced with this challenge in our daily choices and, like Naomi’s nearer relative, we are often more concerned with making the easy choice than with making the right one. Yet more often than not, the right choice is clear.

Strengths and accomplishments

Boaz was known as a man of his word who was sensitive to those in need. He was caring towards his workers and a successful businessman. He shows a keen sense of responsibility and integrity.

Noble fact

Due to his integrity and family responsibility, he became a family connection to the lineage of Jesus Christ.

Life lessons from their story

Doing what must be done and doing it correctly can be heroic. God often is in the little decisions that enfold into His ultimate Kingdom plan.

Prayer: Father, thank You for giving us Boaz as the foreshadowing of Jesus as our redeemer. Through his integrity and responsibility, we learn the importance of making the correct choices concerning our family. Please guide me to act and choose with integrity. Amen.
