Day 59 – Ruth: Character sketch of Naomi and Ruth

“But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” Ruth 1:16-17 NLT

In an age that worships individualism, the story of Naomi & Ruth’s relationship becomes a scriptural sketch modelling good and Biblical relationships. We know more about their relationship than we do about them as individuals. They shared deep sorrow, great affection for each other, and an overriding commitment to the God of Israel. And yet, as much as they depended upon each other, they also gave each other freedom in their commitment to each other. God was at the center of their intimate communication. Ruth came to know the God of Israel through Naomi. The older woman allowed Ruth to see, hear, and feel all the joy and anguish of her relationship with God. How often do you feel that your thoughts and questions about God should be left out of a close relationship?

Strengths and accomplishments

Naomi and Ruth shared a relationship of strong mutual commitment bonded by faith in God. Each tried to do what was best for the other and showed this through loyalty, support and fellowship.

Noble fact

They were all that was left of their family, but through their faith in God and humility became a family connection to the lineage of Jesus Christ.

Life lessons from their story

God’s living presence in any relationship overcomes differences that might otherwise create division and disharmony.

Prayer: Father, thank You for family – blood and extended. Today I ask that You will shine the truth of Your Word over every relationship in my life and show me how to better commit, communicate, and be loyal to those in my life. Amen.
