Day 86 – 2 Kings: Theme

“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” 2 Kings 6:16 NLT

The second book of Kings continues the history of Israel, spanning the period between the death of David and the demise of the nation. Israel had been divided, and the two kingdoms had begun to slide into idolatry and corruption toward collapse and captivity. The book recounts the sordid stories of the 12 kings who ruled over the northern kingdom (Israel) and the 16 kings of the southern kingdom (Judah). For 130 years Israel endured a succession of evil rulers until they were conquered by Assyria and led into captivity. During this time only Hezekiah and Josiah were commended for trusting God. Judah stood for another 136 years before falling to Babylon around 586 BC.

Throughout this dark period, the Bible mentions many prophets who proclaimed God’s message to the nation and their rulers. The most notable of these fearless people of God are Elijah and Elisha. Even during terrible situations, God will have His faithful minority (His remnant) acting courageously by proclaiming His truth.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the faithful remnant in Israel who never stopped proclaiming Your will and warnings to Israel. Give us the courage, like the prophets, to boldly proclaim and glorify You in this dark world. Our modern times may look different than those years, but the message stays the same: be obedient. Amen.
