Day 80 – 1 Kings: The Divided Kingdom

“Then the woman told Elijah, “Now I know for sure that you are a man of God, and that the Lord truly speaks through you.” 1 Kings 17:24 NLT

Reading: 1 Kings 12:1 – 22:53

After Solomon’s death, the northern tribes revolted, and the nation split into two separate kingdoms. As we read about the kings and their wicked ways it seems that there is no point of return for Israel. But God raised a prophet to proclaim His message.

Elijah single-handedly challenged the priesthood of the state of religion and had the priests removed in one day. Through the dividing of the kingdom and the sending of the prophet Elijah, God dealt with the people’s sins in powerful ways. Sin in our lives is graciously forgiven by God when we come to Him in repentance through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Elijah, one of Israel’s greatest prophets, followed God’s instructions and commands, displaying obedience in all his tasks. From calling down fire to devour the tabernacles of the false gods to the moment He was picked up in a chariot of fire, Elijah exhibits love, loyalty, and obedience to God. Through His actions He proclaimed God’s truth calling His beloved nation back to His heart.

Prayer: Father, thank You for sending prophets. Not just for Israel, but today too. Thank You for those whom You hand-pick to deliver Your Word and Truth to those wandering away from You. May we have the discernment and wisdom to recognise the warnings of Your prophets. Amen.
