Day 1 – Fan or follower?

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me…” John 10:27 (KJV)
When we are young, especially in school, we are encouraged to choose a role model from public figures. Someone we can look up to, whose behavior we admire and strive to be like. We then become fans of these people, and we start mimicking their dress style, and maybe even start using words they would use and act the way they would act. Some people would take things to the next level and become true followers of these people, making them their idols and blindly following their lead, no matter what they do.
In the same way, people become fans of Jesus, but very few become His followers. In this devotional, we are going to compare the difference between a fan and a follower, so that we can be sure to be followers of Jesus and not just His fans. He requires us to follow Him in everything, blindly, and believe like children, but we sometimes forget what this means, and as soon as things get a little too uncomfortable for us, we give up and go back to being His fans. Let’s remind ourselves daily to be His follower in everything we do.
Prayer: Father, and Holy Spirit, thank you for calling me to be a follower of Jesus. Please open Your word to me through this devotional, give me a teachable spirit so that I can know where in my life I am not truly following Jesus, but only being a fan. Please help me to walk in obedience to You. Amen.
