Day 90 – A perplexed Herod

Study Luke 9:7-10

“Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead…” Luke 9:7

News of Jesus’ powerful ministry eventually reached the palace of Herod Antipas, leaving the tetrarch deeply perplexed. Haunted by the memory of executing John the Baptist (whom he had beheaded out of cowardice and anger over moral rebuke) Herod absorbed the popular rumours swirling around Jesus. Some whispered that John had risen from the dead; others thought Elijah or one of the ancient prophets had returned.

Herod’s interest in Jesus was not born of sincere spiritual hunger. He was driven by idle curiosity, superstition, and a guilty conscience. 𝘈 𝘣𝘢𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯. Though Herod sought to see Jesus out of fascination, his curiosity carried a dark undercurrent that foreshadowed the increasing danger closing in around the Savior’s path.

Pray with me: Lord Jesus, keep my heart tender and free from a hardened or guilty conscience. When I hear Your truth, let me draw near in genuine repentance and faith, rather than idle curiosity or fear. Amen. ©
