Day 48 – Visible faith, visible forgiveness
“And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Luke 5:21
The faith of these friends was unmistakable – it was rendered visible through their bold, determined action to carry their friend directly to Jesus. If faith remains completely unseen, something vital is missing. Yet can you imagine how those friends must have felt in that moment when Jesus spoke words of forgiveness rather than physical healing?
Jesus understood the man’s true condition and addressed his greatest need first. What good would it be for the man to regain the use of both legs, only to walk straight into hell? Jesus wasn’t implying that this paralyzed man was uniquely sinful or that his paralysis was a direct result of a specific sin. Rather, He went straight to the root of all human suffering and brokenness: our shared need for salvation.
The Pharisees and religious leaders started with sound logic. They correctly recognized that only God has the authority to forgive sins, and it was right for them to examine any new teacher carefully. Their tragic mistake, however, was refusing to recognize who stood right in front of them: God the Son, clothed in complete authority to both heal and forgive. Sadly, many people are still content to merely analyse the power of God rather than experience it, choosing to observe rather than obey.
In human terms, proclaiming forgiveness seems “easier” than commanding a physical healing, because forgiveness happens in the unseen realm of the heart where no one can instantly verify it. But a physical healing can be verified in a second. Jesus willingly put His divine authority on the line in a way that was immediate and undeniable, proving that the One who has the power to make a paralyzed man walk is the exact same One who has the power to wipe away our sins.
If you can heal the body, it is impressive. But to heal both body and soul is undeniably an act of God.
Pray with me: Father, thank You that You sent Jesus not only for our physical healing, but for the healing of our souls through the forgiveness of sin. That we can come today to You, Jesus, for forgiveness and to remove the root of our problems. Thank You that our salvation was this important to You. Amen. ©
