Day 57 – The Beatitudes
Study Luke 6:20-23
“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.” Luke 6:23
It is no accident that this profound message comes immediately after Jesus selected the twelve and right before He sent them out to preach throughout the towns of Galilee. Part of their essential training was to hear, digest, and truly understand this message, as it clearly defined what it meant to be a devoted follower of Jesus the Messiah. This teaching left an indelible mark on the early church; the first believers referenced it constantly, and their daily lives shone with the glory of radical discipleship.
Here, Jesus begins a section of teaching often referred to as the Sermon on the Plain, named so because it took place on a level area (Luke 6:17) and to distinguish it from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. While Luke’s account shares many similarities with Matthew’s, there are key differences, most notably that Luke’s version is much shorter.
Scholars often debate whether these were two separate events or different accounts of the exact same sermon. However, we must remember that Jesus was an itinerant preacher, traveling from place to place, whose central message was always the Kingdom of God. It was only natural for Him to repeat these foundational truths to different audiences across the region. To me, the Beatitudes are like the commandments of the Old Testament and carry a deep spiritual value for our souls.
Pray with me: Father, thank You that the message of Your Kingdom is the fundamental truth and core of the Beatitudes. Please teach me, Holy Spirit, to make this part of my daily life and the way I carry the Gospel over to others. Amen. ©
