Day 19 – Spiritual mentoring methods by Jesus

Luke 14:26-27 (AMP) “If anyone come to me, and does not hate his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his cross, and follow after me, cannot be my disciple”. Please read up to verse 34 as we will do verse mapping.

Jesus makes five important and clear statements of what is expected from disciples. This can be seen as a guideline when looking for a spiritual mentor.

• Relationship (verse 26). Jesus deemed the relationship with His Father so important that our love for God must be greater than our love for our families. Anything in life must not be more important than having an intimate relationship with God

• Purpose (verse 27). Everyone wants to know what our purpose on earth is. The cross was the purpose Jesus had on earth and the cross becomes your purpose when you choose to pick it up.

• Commitment (verses 29-32). In the times we live in today, there is no time for sitting on the fence. You are either for Jesus or against Him. If you still enjoy worldly things, you have made your choice. We must be committed to prayer, reading the Bible, and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit. These are the foundational blocks on which to build your commitment.

• Willingness (verse 33). The cross must be greater than possessions and property. To be a Disciple means you are willing to give up anything you spend time on that is an Idol in your life.

• Value (verse 34). Often, we question our value as human beings, but our Relationship, purpose, commitment, and willingness add value to us as a person and to our ministry and the Kingdom of Heaven.

Prayer: Father we are so good in questioning who You are and live in constant doubt of Your existence. Lord, take the doubt and replace it with faith. Show us how to have a relationship with You Lord and give us purpose to worship and honour You. Help us Lord to stay committed and willing disciples. Amen.
