Day 1 – Metamorphosis

“Stop imitating the ideas and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfecting His eyes.” Romans 12:2 TPT

We were on our way for a weekend break and while staring at the landscape changing in the frame of the window, I noticed thousands of small white butterflies making their way over the fields. I was mesmerized by the migration flight and how far those small little wings could take them. “Where would their journey end?” I wondered…

Years later, as I studied the transformation of our old selves to our new selves, the image of the butterflies fluttered through my mind whilst meditating on our spiritual growth journey. Butterflies develop through a process called metamorphosis, a Greek word meaning transformation. Some insects, like dragonflies, go through an incomplete metamorphosis where the young (called nymphs) look like small adults without wings. However, the growth cycle of butterflies includes a complete metamorphosis. The young are completely different in looks, behaviour, and even dietary needs.

Throughout our spiritual growth journey, we go through a spiritual metamorphosis transforming our ideas, opinions, and thought patterns from the world and the culture we became accustomed to into a Christlikeness with a mindset focused on God’s Kingdom. But that doesn’t mean, that your old ways of thinking are gone. It might feel as though you’re still stuck in the chrysalis. God gave you wings (the ability to transform your mind), but it’s up to you to grow your way through it with His Word as a weapon.

Prayer: Beautiful Creator, thank You for showing us that our spiritual growth can be compared through the perfect process of metamorphosis You created. I pray that this journey helps us to understand the transformation of our thoughts from this world into a Christ-like mindset. It’s my prayer that each beloved studying with this devotional will spread their beautiful wings to reflect Your majestic glory. Amen.
