Dear Thoughts… Day 1

Negative Thoughts

“Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2

Firstly, let me start this devotional series with an honest confession: I failed miserably to action this Word in my daily life. The more I meditated on it, the more it felt like my thoughts were under vicious attack. I was shocked about what I was thinking and soon realised that the Holy Spirit was highlighting the negative thoughts for me to bring them into obedience under Christ Jesus.

This was no easy task at all. Even at this very moment, I must be constantly aware of my thoughts – guarding them against the negativity which sometimes seems to overwhelm me like a tsunami. I understand too, why so many books are published about the war inside our minds. It’s a constant battle the enemy wages: if he wins your mind, he wins your soul.

So, I decided to write notes to my own thoughts reminding me to find the Truth of God’s Word in every negative thought uninvitingly popping into my head. And negative thoughts are uninvited! They force themselves in through the slightest crack in our minds and make themselves at home in the forefront of our feelings and emotions. Have you ever been upset with someone about something you “thought” they did or are going to do without them doing anything? An uninvited thought sows negativity.

‘Dear Thoughts, I did not fail miserably. I am allowing God to transform me into a new person by teaching me to change the way I think. I choose to think positively about every situation even though the behaviour and customs of this world expect me to react negatively. When I succeed to bring my thoughts to the Light of the Word and find the Truth, I am victorious through Jesus. I am a positive thinker learning God’s will for my life which is good and pleasing and perfect. PERFECT…’

Prayer: Father, thank You for teaching me to change the way I think. To start breaking thought patterns keeping me stuck in a negative mindset. I ask that the uninvited thoughts that creep through to the forefront of our minds be pointed out by the Holy Spirit so we can identify the lie of the thought and replace it with Your truth. Please teach us to change the way we think so we can learn Your will for us which is GOOD and PLEASING and PERFECT. Amen.
