Day 11 – Cedar

(Cedrus)

“But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.” Psalm 92:12-14 NLT

In the grand forestry of scripture, the cedar tree symbolises strength, resilience, and the dwelling place of God (Ezekiel 17:22). One notable biblical reference to the cedar tree is our verses for today, encapsulating the idea that those who strive for righteousness will not only flourish like the palm, but grow to be strong – not just physically, but in our spiritual growth too.

It is described as a tall and sturdy tree with aromatic wood, making it highly valued for construction and craftsmanship. The use of cedar wood in building structures, such as the temple of Solomon, further emphasizes its importance and grandeur.

Beyond its physical, majestic attributes, its towering presence and enduring nature serve as metaphors for God’s strength and everlasting love. Just as the cedar tree provides shelter and protection, God is often portrayed as a shelter and refuge for his people. God is our strength; scripture promises this multiple times. As well as our refuge and protection while His Spirit gives us the spiritual strength and endurance to grow as majestic as the cedar.

Prayer: Father, how amazing to behold Your creation and the many wonders of the cedar and that it symbolises Your strength, and Your strength in us. Guide us, Lord, with resilience and endurance to grow strong in our faith. Amen.
