Day 13 – Character map of Jacob

“What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.” Genesis 25:15 NLT

The significance of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is not based upon their characteristics, but rather the character of God. Throughout Jacob’s life, he lived up to the meaning of his name, “he grasps the heel” (figuratively, “he deceives”), but the encounters with God brought about a change through the name Israel meaning “God fights”. Can you think of times god has made himself known to you and have these experiences put your life onto His path? Maybe you are like the young Jacob, forcing God to track you down in the desert of your life with your own plans and mistakes. Or the older Jacob who presented his desires and plans to God for His approval before actioning them. Regardless of where you are, God loves you and you are part of His plan. Through His guidance, you can dust a Jacob-life from your shoes and step into salvation with Jesus.

Strengths and accomplishments

Jacob was the father of the 12 tribes of Israel. His character showed determination and willingness to work long and hard for what he wanted.

Weaknesses and mistakes

When faced with conflict, Jacob relied on his resources rather than going to God for help. He tended to deceive others for his benefit.

Life lessons from Jacob’s story

From Jacob’s story, we learn that security does not lie in the accumulation of goods. All human intentions and actions – for good or evil – are woven by God into his ongoing plan.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Jacob and what we can learn from him through Your Word. May we rely fully on You for what we need and not take matters into our own hands. Father, forgive me for the times I deceived and lied to get my way instead of coming to You who is my Jehovah Jireh. Amen.
