Day 13 – Who is He?

Exodus 3:13 “And Moses said to God, Behold, when I come to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is His name? What shall I say to them?”

One would think that when Moses referred to God as “the God of your fathers”, that his fellow Israelites would know who God was. But he anticipated that they would want a more explicit description, a name. This got me thinking. They didn’t necessarily know God personally. They knew of Him by what was passed down through the generations, but that wasn’t enough. That was not a relationship.

When God spoke the Ten Commandments, the Israelites perceived it as “thundering and lightning, the noise of a trumpet and a smoking mountain”. They asked Moses to listen on their behalf to what God had to say. “You speak to us … but let not God speak to us, lest we die … And the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near to the thick darkness to where God was.”

Is this not the problem of many today? That they rely on someone else to hear God’s voice, that they don’t really believe God is interested in them? Thus, they don’t know Him personally, they just know of Him. The good news is that God wants intimate communion with you and me! Do you desire to know Him?

Prayer:  Dear heavenly Father, You are the same God that spoke to Moses. You have not changed who You are, and You will always remain the same. Thank You that I have the right to be called Your child, and therefore I may know You in a much deeper way than I ever have. Please show me who You are. Open my heart that I may hear Your voice. Amen.
