Day 14 – Covenant

“So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, and they intermarried with them. Israelite sons married their daughters, and Israelite daughters were given in marriage to their sons. And the Israelites served their gods.” Judges 3:5-6 NLT
You are fiercely hated by the enemy because you, yes you, are created in the image of God. Something he is not. Another institution he hates is the covenant of marriage because it represents our Godly covenant through Jesus, our Groom. He can never be in a covenant with God, enraging his hatred towards husbands and wives even more. The moment Israel started to settle in the land, they entered into covenants with the nations. The last sentence in our verse today shows us the direct result of these covenants: Israel served their gods. In other words, they willingly entered into covenants of sin.
Marriages have been under attack from ancient days and will be under onslaught until judgment day. Using this strategy the enemy does everything he possibly can to come between a husband and wife to break this sacred covenant. A little sin here and a little lie there and suddenly it seems justifiable to walk out of the covenant. “Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.” Genesis 2:25 NLT. Nakedness does not just imply being without clothes. It is being completely transparent and honest with your spouse, not hiding anything in shame but being naked about everything. The more “naked” you are with each other, the less opportunity the serpent has to hiss his lies.
“After supper he took another cup of wine and said, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and his people – an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” Luke 22:20 NLT. God’s strategy from the beginning of time was His only Son Jesus and the covenant He brings through His blood to unite us with Him. Accepting Jesus in your marriage aligns your “oneness” with God’s heart. In this covenant, there is no space for the enemy and all his strategies.
Today you have the opportunity to break up with the covenant of sin, be naked towards your spouse and enter into the divine covenant with Jesus in your marriage.
Prayer: Father, sometimes I catch the serpent trying to slither his way into the covenant of our marriage. But I know, because we have given our lives to you and have Jesus as part of our covenant in our marriage, we can identify this strategy. Today I pray the blood of Jesus over the marriage of my friend reading this and ask that You, Jesus, reconcile and renew this relationship so that they can stand honest and naked before You and with each other in the marriage covenant. Amen.
