Day 172 – Hosea: Overview of Hosea’s timeline
“Yet the time will come when Israel’s people will be like the sands of the seashore—too many to count! Then, at the place where they were told, ‘You are not my people,’ it will be said, ‘You are children of the living God.” Hosea 1:10 NLT
At the time, Hosea might not have understood the reasoning behind his dramatic life and marriage. But God did, and in His words to Hosea, He reaffirmed the promise He made to Abraham: “Israel’s people will be like the sands of the seashore – too many to count.” With this, God also gives the promise of redemption.
Hosea served as a prophet to Israel (the northern kingdom) from 753 to 715 BC. The last six kings of Israel were especially wicked; they promoted heavy taxes, oppression of the poor, idol worship, and total disregard for God. As a result, Israel was subjected to the Assyrians and forced to pay tribute, depleting their few remaining resources.
Hosea’s main message to the people of Israel was to convict them of their sins against God as an adulterous woman sins against her husband. As part of his prophecies, he told them that judgment was sure to come for those who disregard God and fellow humans. This was fulfilled when Israel fell to Assyria in 722 BC.
Hosea’s message still applies to us today. Sin severs our relationship with God, breaking our commitment to Him. While all must answer to God for their sins, those who seek His forgiveness through Jesus Christ are spared eternal judgment.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the constant affirmation of the promise You made to Abraham and that we may be counted as children of the living God. Open our hearts to heed Your warnings and give us strong convictions to repent from our sins. Amen.
