Day 2 – Why Climb?

“To the Israelites at the foot of the mountain, the glory of the Lord appeared at the summit like a consuming fire. Then Moses disappeared into the cloud as he climbed higher up the mountain. He remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.” Exodus 24:17-18

At the top of Mount Sinai, Moses received the 10 commandments directly from God. The elected elders of Israel declined to take on the climb with the patriarch because of their fear. They saw a consuming fire, Moses saw the glory of God – and He climbed. But his mountaineering did not end there. Later in Deuteronomy, God commanded Moses to climb Mount Nebo to view the Promised Land.

When faith experiences are called mountaintop experiences, it is no cliché – mountains are often the places where God encounters people, changes their lives, and sends them into the world with His message. Our Saviour Jesus Christ climbed mountains too.

“About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white.” Luke 9:28-29

Why climb, you still wonder? In both accounts, God’s glory is revealed on the mountaintop. From the given law to the One who became the law. What does God have for you at the top?

Prayer: Father, thank You that we have learned that You chose to reveal Your glory at the top of mountains to reveal Your plan for the world. Firstly, for Your nation the Israelites, and secondly to Your Son, Jesus Christ for all of humanity. Lord, we may feel like just letting go of the rock and falling, but I ask today for Your encouragement for all who read this, that they will hold on, draw their strength from You and reach the summit. Amen.
