Day 216 – Malachi: Theme

“Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives. His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse.” Malachi 4:5-6 NLT

Israel had shown contempt for God’s name, offering defiled sacrifices, led others into sin, broken God’s laws, called evil good, kept God’s tithes and offerings for themselves, and become arrogant. The relationship was broken, and judgment and punishment would be theirs, in the midst of this wickedness; however, a faithful few – the remnant – still loved and honoured God. God would shower His blessings upon these men and women faithful to Him. Malachi’s message of hope gives the promise of forgiveness – this is beautifully expressed in today’s verse.

The book of Malachi forms a bridge between the Old and New Testaments. As you read through Malachi, see yourself as the recipient of this word of God to his people. Evaluate the depth of your commitment, the sincerity of your worship, and the direction of your life. Then allow God to restore your relationship with him through his love and forgiveness.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the bridge between the Old and New Testaments. The bridge between the law and life. The bridge between the death of our sins and the Life that Jesus brings. Guide us, O Lord, that we can examine our hearts, repent, and build our relationship with You. Amen.
