Day 5 – The Word

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God.” John 1:1-2 NLT

John’s description of Jesus at the start of His Gospel is no small thing. In Jewish culture, words were powerful – creation was brought into existence by the Word. John affirms Jesus, the Word as the second Person of the triune God. He spoke all things (me and you included) out of nothing. Jesus’s recorded words not only spoke words that lead to eternal life, but He is the very words or life.

For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the Word was more than just language and communication. It meant life, power, and a personal involvement through perfect relationship with God (and with us).

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your powerful Word and that Jesus is the altogether wonderful Word. Thank You for the Bible to which we can turn to read Your Word and about the Word. Give us discernment and wisdom to understand it. Amen.
