Day 6 – Immanuel
“All right then, the Lord himself will you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’). Isaiah 7:14 NLT
The Hebrew name Immanuel appears in the Book of Isaiah as a sign that God will protect the House of David. The Gospel of Matthew interprets this as a prophecy of the birth of the Messiah and the fulfilment of the promise in scripture through the person of Jesus. Both, the prophet and the disciple, affirm that Christ (who would be born in Bethlehem) would be God Himself who came to earth in the form of man to live among His people for their salvation.
To know Christ is to know God. What great encouragement and comfort it is living on this side of the cross. The faithful in the Old Testament looked forward with great anticipation to Immanuel, and we know the altogether wonderful fulfilment of God in Jesus Christ who lived a perfect life and went to the cross to be with us.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the prophecy and fulfilment of Jesus, Immanuel. That He chose to come down to be with us just like Immanuel means. Thank You Jesus, that through the promised Immanuel, we have the eternal gift to be with God. Amen.
