Fasting like Daniel – Day 12

Free me

Fast: Sun up to sundown

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.” Romans 8:1-2 (NLT)

I read an interesting article about circus elephants. When they are calves, a chain would be put around their ankle with a spike driven into the ground, allowing them a certain area of movement. They would pull and tuck at the chain to free themselves but to no avail. As the calve grows older, it becomes accustomed to the chain and the permitted boundary. The moment the mahout (elephant keeper, trainer, or rider) sees the elephant is not fighting for freedom anymore, he replaces the chain with a rope. The elephant can easily snap the rope, but because he got used to the chain and the boundary of it, he wouldn’t. He has accepted he cannot break free.

With certain things in our lives, we are like the circus elephant who became accustomed to the chain and boundary it allowed. This can be a “pet sin”, addiction or anything prohibiting you from living free in Christ. While fasting, ask the Holy Spirit to show you the chains you’ve been accustomed to and break them in the name of Jesus Christ who came to set us free.

Prayer: Father, I ask today that You will show me the chains still holding me back from freely living. I believe that Jesus Christ, the power of the life-giving Spirit has set me free from the chains of sin. I am free in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
