Day 25 – Leviticus: Worshiping a Holy God

Reading: Leviticus 1:1 to Leviticus 17:16
“For I am the Lord your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. So do not defile yourselves with any of these small animals that scurry along the ground.” Leviticus 11:44 NLT
In chapters 1 through 17 God provides specific instructions for the kind of worship expected from His chosen nation that would be pleasing to Him. We learn about the nature and heart of God developing within us the right attitude toward the heart of worship.
There are five kinds of offerings fulfilling two main purposes: one to show praise, adoration, thankfulness and devotion; the other for atonement – the covering and removal of sin. Animal offerings symbolised the person was giving their life to God through the life of the offering. Through this, we learn about the cost of sin and that we cannot forgive ourselves. God’s system requires a life for a life and in the Old Testament, the animals were symbolic of the atonement and forgiveness of sin in one’s life until Jesus paid the full debt of sin for all humanity. Forever!
Through studying the offerings – whether worship or atonement – we understand the seriousness of sin and the importance of asking for forgiveness. Today, we know Jesus the Lamb of God gave His life for us and through Him we can have an intimate, worshipping relationship with God.
Prayer: Father, we tend to skip over the detailed description and explanation of Leviticus not seeing it as worship and adoration pleasing to You. May we learn the heart of worship within this book and apply the lessons in our worship.
