Day 291 – 1 Timothy – Instructions for elders
“I am writing these things to you now, even though I hope to be with you soon, so that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.” 1 Timothy 3:14-15 NLT
Read 1 Timothy 4:1 – 1 Timothy 6:21
Paul gives specific instructions concerning the qualifications for church leaders so that the church might honor God and operate smoothly in unity. They must be wholly committed to Christ and seek to develop a Christ-like character and not seek their own ambition.
Through these instructions, Paul highlights that prayer in public worship must be done with a proper attitude towards God and fellow believers. Christian character must be evident in every aspect of worship – not only for the elders, but for us too. When we become mature in our faith, we are elders of the Body of Christ, and it is our responsibility to disciple young believers in Spirit and in Truth.
Led by those appointed, the church has a responsibility to care for the needs of all its members, especially those who are sick, poor, or widowed – caring goes beyond having good intentions; it exhibits genuine love.
Prayer: Father, thank you for appointing elders in the church, but also for teaching us that as mature Christians, we also act as elders to those we disciple. Give us the wisdom to lead them in the footsteps of Jesus, and not our own. Amen.
