Day 30 – Genealogy of Jesus Christ
Study Luke 3:23-38
“Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,” Luke 3:23
I know reading a list of names in a genealogy seem … well, a bit boring right? But Jesus’ genealogy is important. Luke only gives the family tree 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 the confirmation of His sonship pointing to God as His Father.
Matthew identifies Joseph’s father as Jacob (Matthew 1:16) while Luke records that it was Eli (Heli’s son). The ancient world often referred to a man’s son’s-in-laws as his son. To me, this is a way of counting the daughters too. Thus, Joseph was the son-in-law to Heli and the ancestry listed is that of Mary.
Through the ancestral record, we see a few familiar names like David, Boaz, Judah, Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, Seth, and Adam – confirming God’s plan from Eden to Jesus which will continue to eternity.
Prayer: Father, so many times we just skip scriptures containing genealogy records without paying any attention to it. Thank You for showing us that there is a specific reason for this being included in Your Word so that we can recognise Your plan through history unto the future. Amen. ©
