Day 4 – Prepare the way

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” Isaiah 40:3 NKJV

Unlike the other Gospels, Luke does not begin with the birth of Jesus. Instead, he turns to the one prophesied who will prepare the way of the Lord. The fulfilment of the Isaiah prophecy can be found in Matthew 3:1-3, where John the Baptist is explicitly identified as the “voice crying in the wilderness.” John himself affirms this calling in John 1:20‑23, quoting the same verse to define his life’s mission.

Malachi 3:1 declares: “Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple.” This prophecy anticipates a messenger who clears the path before the Lord. In Matthew 11:7‑10, Jesus confirms that John is this messenger, proclaiming that no one greater had been born among women.

Luke’s narrative immediately presents John as the prophetic forerunner to Christ. By linking their stories from birth, he bridges Israel’s covenant history (old era) with the dawning new era of salvation, showing that God’s plan was deliberately set in motion. John’s parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, embody the faithful Levitical priesthood, signalling that Jesus’ ministry arises from Israel’s heritage yet ultimately fulfils and surpasses the old religious order.

Through his careful craft, Luke draws on an ancient cultural image: a herald running ahead of a royal king to announce his arrival and prepare the road. John the Baptist assumes this role, the herald of the King, clearing the way for Jesus’ public ministry and proclaiming His coming. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘏𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘺.

Pray with me: Thank You, Lord, for the announcement of our King, born for all nations. Today we have learned about the bridge between the old and the new and how You have orchestrated this from the beginning and shared it through Your faithful prophets. Thank You that the Holy Spirit prepares our hearts for the coming of our King once more. Give us ears to hear. Amen. ©
