Preparing the soil – Day 4
Different soil for different seeds
“Jesus said, “How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it? It is like a mustard seed planted in the ground. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of all garden plants; it grows long branches, and birds can make nests in its shade.” Mark 4:30-32 NLT
I soon discovered not all seed grows in the same type of soil. Mustard seed is best germinated in fertile, well-drained loamy soil. Loam soil is a mixture of equal parts clay, slit, and sand giving the mustard seed the benefits of each growth stage it needs to go through until full maturity.
To describe the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus used the illustration of a mustard seed planted in the ground – meaning fertile, well-drained loamy soil. Our hearts should be like a good mixture of loam soil. Too much clay will not absorb Living Water as needed, too much sand will loose the value of it and too much slit will not hold the clay and sand together as needed.
But seed will germinate in any type of soil, the growth and health of the seedling depends on the correct type of soil. I see ministries as multiple fields of different soil each uniquely prepared to germinate and grow the seed and because we all have unique jobs to do in the Kingdom, we can’t all grow in the same type of soil.
Prayer: Father, thank You for teaching me about different soil and that different soil is needed for different plant species. It taught me that we are not all planted in the same field and require different soil and growth conditions to reach maturity for Your Kingdom. Amen.
