Day 4 – You are My image bearer

Exodus 20:4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything” KJV

To understand this law, we must also understand what the meaning of “idol” and “graven image” is. The meaning is “a carved idol or representation of a god used as an object of worship” Plainly stated it is to worship something a human made, like a statue or car.

For Israel:

While reading the Bible, we will note that the Israelites often go astray and worship other Idols. Even after they witnessed the miracles like the plagues in Egypt and when they had to cross the sea, the Lord split it into two so they could cross on dry land. God led them with a cloud by day and with fire at night but still they doubted the power of the Lord. While Moses was on Mount Sinai to collect the 10 Commandments the Israelites made a golden bull. When the Israelites make an image of idols and bow down to them means that they respect the object more than they respect God. Worshipping an idol means that they do not trust in the Lord’s provision or well-being for them.

For today:

I just cannot image making an “object” and bowing down to worship it, but idol worship is still happening today in our modernised world. This law is so easy to break because the devil has us hooked to our cell phones never leaving our hands. Anything you worship more than God is a “graven image”. Our family, cars, bodies, sports, and even our jobs are dangerous things to worship. But all these earthly things will disappear. We can be sure of one thing, God will never go away, and that’s why for our sake it’s best to only worship Him. God is loyal and He is a Promise keeper. If He is your one and only true God, you will see a Father who is alive, and you will hear His voice daily.

Prayer: Lord, we bow down to only You Lord. You are our God, and we want to respect You as our King. Help us to understand Your love for us and help us to have the same love for others who cross our paths. Thank You that You are loyal to us that is loyal to You. Amen.
