Day 51 – New wine

Study Luke 5:33-39

“And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.” Luke 5:36

Fasting is the soul’s response to the felt absence of Jesus Christ—a profound awareness of deep spiritual need. It stems from a longing for His presence and a hunger for a special blessing rooted entirely in Him. In those moments when the Bridegroom’s absence is sharply felt, fasting becomes the natural language of the heart.

In His response, Jesus neither forbids fasting nor promotes it as a rigid religious obligation. Instead, He gives us something far deeper to consider. Fasting, when combined with prayer, is meant to be a genuine expression of a humbled heart seeking the Lord in true repentance. It is the polar opposite of the ostentatious, self-serving displays staged by the Pharisees for religious show and personal recognition.

Jesus uses the parable of the wineskins to illustrate this truth: you cannot pour His new life into old, rigid forms. The salvation and transformation He brings will never fit inside old patterns of sin or religious traditions that do not align with God’s Word. This is precisely why His ministry was set apart, operating outside the established rabbinical schools.

Jesus did not come to fix and patch up; He came with a whole new set of clothes for us.

Pray with me: Thank Jesus that You renew me from the inside out and that there is no space left for the old me. I pray that You help me shed the old wineskins in my life so that I can hold the new. Amen. ©
